Gardening is an activity many people like to take up as a form of recreation. Planting a sapling in a garden or in a pot at home can be a fun activity to do with friends and family. There are ways of gardening and many types of plants you can use in your garden. Fruits, vegetables,  flowers, and succulents happen to be some of the most common plants that people like to plant in their garden or in pots. But not everyone has the privilege of having a nice backyard to plant saplings and most people don’t have the time to plant and undertake maintenance activities like weeding, pruning, fertilizing, etc. For this, an easy option is to have a terrarium.

What is a terrarium?

A terrarium is a glass container having small, decorative plants and soil. It can be a sealed or open container. It is basically like a self-sustaining ecosystem in a jar. Terrarium containers are generally transparent and have an opening big enough for the gardener to access the plants inside.

This is a perfect way of adding some greenery to your home, and it does not take up too much space in your home. It is also easy to maintain. This is a nice addition to your home decor and it gives you a lot of joy to see the plants growing.

Components of a terrarium:

  • Any kind of glass container, for example, a jar, a glass fishbowl, or an aquarium tank.
  • The soil of your choice.
  • Some plants. Many people prefer succulents for their terrariums.

How to build a terrarium?

Building a terrarium is fairly simple. If you wish you can take up a Terrarium Workshop and learn from the professionals how to build one. You can also find tutorials on youtube and blog posts that will teach you and guide you through the process of making a terrarium.

Here are some easy steps taught in a terrarium workshop:

  • Choose a container: The base of a terrarium is the container in which you will put your plants. Pick a transparent container that has a big opening in it so you can water the plants regularly. There are containers available specifically for terrariums.
  • Make the base: Once the container is selected, it’s time to start building the base of the terrarium. The base is basically the soil in which the plants will grow. You can start by adding a layer of pebbles and topping that up with soil. Make sure to put a layer at least an inch or two thick.

Add the plants: This is the main part of building a terrarium. There are many plants out there but not all of them can be suitable for a terrarium. You should pick plants that are easy to maintain and that grow well with minimum water and sunlight. The best picks for a terrarium are succulents, mosses, and ferns. Remove the plants from the container and remove the excess soil. Dig small holes in the terrarium soil and put your plants in them securely.
